How can I be of service?

by Dr. DeeAnna Merz Nagel

How can I be of service? This is a familiar phrase to me- one that resonates from a lifetime of being in the helping profession.

When I was in undergrad majoring in Mental Health and Human Services- I was introduced to so many different organizations, affiliations, non-profits and faith-based missions (I lived in Atlanta at the time). This deep introduction to community work became entrenched into my own personal ethos. My work and volunteer efforts were very reflective of community outreach.

After graduate school I continued being of service in paid positions that ran the gamut from adults with developmental disabilities to child protective services and children in foster care. I even became a therapeutic foster parent.

About 8 years ago, having practiced counseling and psychotherapy in large agency and group settings, I opened a solo practice. I saw people in my office and online. Just me- no other psychotherapists within reach to share lunch with or employees to network with in the broader community.

In a word, the work was isolating. I was being of service to individuals both online and in person, but these were singular moments and I missed the collective experience. I co-founded Online Therapy Institute and became very involved in cyber communities- and I love being of service to students and colleagues seeking new ways of delivering counseling, coaching and healing via the internet. Because so much of my work has been focused on education, I closed my private practice to focus on teaching and growing that online peer community of healers and helpers.

And then something happened. I was introduced to essential oils. I used them daily and within a few weeks I was “hooked.” I used the oils, shared the oils with others, and before long, I had integrated essential oils into my business. First up? Integrating essential oils into my online social presence, creating and joining online essential oils communities.

But guess what? It seems I have come full circle. The essential oils have given me desire and purpose to engage in my local community again- not just online but with my neighbors, friends and other colleagues. From coffee with a friend to the local BNI chapter I joined, I am engaged “on the ground” both personally and collectively. It feels good to be of service in this way!.

I believe in the vision and mission of Young Living Essential Oils-

Vision: To bring Young Living Essential Oils to every home in the world.

Mission: We honor our stewardship to champion nature’s living energy, essential oils, by fostering a community of healing and discovery while inspiring individuals to wellness, purpose, and abundance.

My vocation includes the best of both worlds- This world- earth, grass under my feet- and the cyber world- where connectedness and possibilities are only limited by our imagination.

People say to me all the time now- “Wow! That is quite a shift from online therapy to aromatherapy…”

Not so much. Not if you know my journey.

But most of all? I continue to be of service!
